"The whites from the Huasco Valley exude personality. The very special terroir at the start of the Atacama Desert (the driest in the world) and very close to the sea (about 14 kilometers), and on the bed of the Huasco River, produces wines with the same charged character. Take this chardonnay, for example. A blend of two vineyards, one with alluvial soils and the other with saline soils as white as chalk. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks, and the wine was aged in a 2,000-liter foudre and two 1,000-liter concrete eggs. The result is a wine that may be eccentric, but it's also highly drinkable. Unlike many of the so-called "natural" wines, where the clarity of their appearance, aromas, or flavors is less important than their eccentricity factor--the intellectual pleasure of trying something different--in this case, it has all that as well as flavors of ripe white fruits in a juicy wine that's also delicious to drink."

"This is a 100% chardonnay from two vineyards--two-thirds from Longomilla and one-third from Nicolasa. Longomilla is a vineyard beside the Huasco River, planted in 2007 on stone and lime soils 24 kilometers from the sea. Nicolasa is 18 kilometers from the Pacific and has white, saline soil. It was planted in 2009 in a place that has "a much more desert-like, much more arid vision than Longomilla," says winemaker Felipe Tosso. In the raw, harsh context of Copiapó, Longomilla gives rise to riper, more expansive and enveloping wines, while Nicolasa offers a vertical side that's firm and austere. Here the blend is stunning. Pure ripe fruit with a bolt of acidity in the midst. A wine to cellar for a decade."

And it's creamy, too, with friendly textures as well as lots of acidity, lots of vigor. A unique wine."

Tara White 1 continues to be one of the best whites in Chile."
