This pinot is wild in its aromas, which are reminiscent of herbs and earth, and on the palate, the tannins mark a rough, firm, sharp texture, followed by lots of ripe red fruits and more herbs in a wine with a long life ahead in the bottle."

"This pinot plays a different game--or at least it plays by different rules--than the other pinot players in Chile. It comes from two vineyards in the Huasco Valley, both an eight-hour drive from Santiago. The Longomilla Vineyard is 24 kilometers from the sea, beside the Huasco River and planted on lime and stone soils. And Nicolasa is on lime and salt soils. The blend works very well here, especially because it has a decisive effect on the character of this wine. The aromas here aren't pinot, they're mineral, like coal. There's basically no fruit. What there is, though, is soil, acidity, tannins, and depth of flavors. All of that and more extends over the palate and stays there, vibrating, playing with your tongue, tickling it with the acidity and creating a stir with those fierce tannins. Wait a second and see where this wine leads."

"Ventisquero has two vineyards planted in Huasco, near the coast in northern Chile at the northern frontier of Chilean wine country. The first is Longomilla, planted in 2007, 23 kilometers from the sea on the bank of the Huasco River. The other is Nicolasa, 15 kilometers from the Pacific, with a powerful maritime influence. Both are extreme vineyards planted on saline soils with near zero fertility. This blend is from both of them--two-thirds from Longomilla and one-third from Nicolasa--and it has everything but fruit. Well, of course there's fruit, but there are also earthy and metallic notes. Aged for 2 years in old--very old--5th-use barrels, the texture has sharp tannins and acidity that crunches on the palate. The next time you visit Huasco, deep in the world's driest desert, the Atacama, think about this wine. It will all make sense."
