"The latest bottling of St. Henri, from a cool vintage, is a classic. Inky-hued, it's a deep well of flavor: plush blackberries, roasted vegtables, coffee beans, dark chocolate and a sanguine nuance. The palate is rich and mouthfilling but linear, with polished, spicy oak and fine, powerful tannins. It's a big wine that needs a major hit of protein if drinking now, but it will age beautifully for many decades to come. Drink through 2045. Christina Pickard"

"The latest St. Henri has all the polished, chocolaty plushness Penfolds is so known for, but this bottling is particularly comfortable in its own skin, and seems set for a longer time in cellar than Penfolds Grange. It's denser, with more earthy, olivey, charred oak notes than the brand's most famous wine--and also wildly more affordable--with fleshy plum and brambly berry fruit woven into those more barrel-derived secondary notes. Despite its velvety opulence, it's not bombastic. Tannins are muscular and spicy and also precise and refined, knitting together the plump fruit. Drink 2023-2040 and likely longer. It's still unmistakably Penfolds, though: rich and polished. The nose is a downright pretty mix of sun-ripened blueberries, mocha, violets, black olives and touches of fresh eucalyptus leaves and Middle Eastern spices. There's power on the palate but elegance too. Silky with an even-handed grip of savory fine tannins, the fruit is ripe and plush and set up for aging. "(2012) Almost as iconic an icon as the Grange, St Henri appeared in 1957 as a counterpoint to Grange, with no oak influence, aged as it is in huge, 50-year-old wooden vats. In 2008 around 9% Cabernet Sauvignon joins the Shiraz in the blend. Dense and dark on the nose, there is a fine, curranty character and enticing blueberry fruit. It has depth, but it has brightness too with a delicious mouth-feel and real life and energy. The tannins are fine but rounded, but there's so much juicy, plum and sweet blackberry fruit flooding the mid-palate. Big and bold, and structured too. Penfolds suggest it will drink well until 2038."

With no oak overlay, it's chocolaty and tarry, with plummy fruit. The 2003 is full-bodied, with mildly coarse, chewy tannins, yet may not turn out to be as long-lived as the best St. Henri vintages. Drink 2010-2018."

"(2006) Always one of my favourite Penfolds reds, St Henri is aged only in large, older oak vats with no small barrel treatment and has a history as old as Grange's. It has a pure, deep blackcurrant throat lozenge aroma. It has a meaty muscularity, and little notes of pepper and cream, but is composed and elegant. On the palate there is a great thrust of blue/black fruit of immense concentration. Nuances of leather and tobacco join a liquoricy black fruit that is solid and supple. Lovely spice and pepper notes highlight the finish."

"Grape and blackberry flavors hold the fort down on the palate, and cassis is the main player on the nose. Although it is a very good wine, the feel here is dry, thick and woodsy--a curious thing considering that St. Henri is traditionally matured in old oak vats. Alcohol is also evident on both nose and palate. I love St. Henri in general, but this young one is looking a little awkward. Imported by Southcorp Wines."

"(2004) This is arguably Penfold's "purest" expression of Shiraz: it is made in 50-year-old 1,460-litre casks, not barriques, and sees no barrel ageing. Until the 1980's St-Henri sold for exactly the same price as Grange, it's oakier cousin. This has a very, very deep colour. It is concentrated and terrifically sweet, with an old wood character that is shiny and nutty, reminiscent of polished old wood and chestnut. The fruit is sweet and black, with cassis and damson, some tarry, mulberry quality too. Beautiful palate: sweet and shimmering like black silk with cassis and ripe summer berries, underpinned by chocolaty depth. Grippy tannins and good acidity add backbone. Great length and a fine wine."
