yr. 1978 Jeannie Cho Lee:

90 of 100 Points.

"Jeannie Cho Lee" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1978 on 01.01.2016 with 90 of 100 points.

"This bottle was slightly musty but there is no denying the wine's pedigree and gorgeous herbal, earthy flavors with grippy tannins. The wine has aged beautifully with layers of aromatics that shows through the mustiness."

yr. 1971 Jeannie Cho Lee:

96 of 100 Points.

"Jeannie Cho Lee" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1971 on 01.07.2015 with 96 of 100 points.

"Sweet delicate flavors of potpourri, leather and layers of delicate dried red fruits. The gorgeous bouquet is followed by silky, ripe tannins and more sweetness on the mid-palate. During this period, the wines were bottled 4 to 5 times during the wines life so there is much bottle variation. Maturation is in all large oak vats. 1971 was a warm vintage and it rained many times during the summer with perfect summer weather. Conditions reduced crop by 40 to 50%, so grapes are concentrated and sweet."

yr. 1961 Jeannie Cho Lee:

92 of 100 Points.

"Jeannie Cho Lee" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1961 on 01.07.2015 with 92 of 100 points.

"I expected this vintage to be sweeter but the palate is evolved, elegant and more savory rather than sweet. Ready to enjoy now with dried herbs, earthy, savory flavors and dried red flowers. Moderate rather than long finish. This vintage was made in the traditional style, in large oak vats."

yr. 2012 Jeannie Cho Lee:

89 of 100 Points.

"Jeannie Cho Lee" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 2012 on 01.07.2015 with 89 of 100 points.

"This blend of Nebbiolo from 8 different Barbaresco sites is well crafted and balanced with Gaja's typical supple, firm tannins and precise flavors. Enjoy it now but best in 2 to 4 years."

yr. 2004 Doctorwine:

95 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 2004 on 26.05.2015 with 95 of 100 points.

"Made from only Nebbiolo grapes. Among Angelo Gaja?s many wines I continue to consider his Barbaresco to be his most authentic and consistent red. This was particularly true of this 2004, a very good year. The wine?s garnet color had a good intensity and the aromas were typical, linear and elegant with scents of licorice, tobacco and violet along with smoked notes just noticeable in the background. The mouthfeel was harmonious, with an almost salty acidity nicely held in check by the extracts. The tannins were just a tad dusty and distinct thanks to the wine?s relative youth and it is easy to see how the wine will improve with another three years in the bottle. The finish had a good persistence without any bitterness."

yr. 1964 Doctorwine:

98 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1964 on 05.05.2015 with 98 of 100 points.

"Hats off, a wine that made history and will remain in history. This was probably the best wine of the whole tasting and despite having distinct orange nuances in its pale red color, it was far from past its prime, in fact it was at its peak. The aroma is decidedly balsamic and spicy with notes of crushed wild roses and whiffs of freshly cut medicinal herbs. The mouthfeel is velvety and caressing, indecent. The aftertaste is eternal. At auction this costs no less than 350-400 euros if well-preserved."

yr. 1974 Doctorwine:

97 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1974 on 05.05.2015 with 97 of 100 points.

"Another masterpiece from King Angelo. The color is a bold, red-brick while the many-sided bouquet is initially whispered before exploding with scents of underbrush and ripe porcino mushroom and even some truffle. The notes of tobacco are as always present as are those of cacao and spice. The mouthfeel is formidable with a gushing acidity and a spellbinding silkiness. At an auction it fetches 250-300 euros (and is worth every penny if well-preserved)."

yr. 1999 Doctorwine:

95 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1999 on 05.05.2015 with 95 of 100 points.

"One of the best Gaja Barbaresco I have tasted in years. Even though it had not breathed it was solemnly expressive. Its red color was still intact and the intense bouquet has scents of incense and blueberry jam, chocolate and a hint of sweet tobacco. The mouthfeel was lively, pulsating and broad."

yr. 2001 Doctorwine:

93 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 2001 on 05.05.2015 with 93 of 100 points.

"The bottle at the tasting was a little bit corked but one opened the next day at another event was outstanding. The wine has a fiery red color and an explosive aroma of cherry and black cherry pulp accompanied by the usual spice notes. The mouthfeel is velvety and full, rich and provocative."

yr. 1987 Doctorwine:

87 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1987 on 05.05.2015 with 87 of 100 points.

"The color has some light garnet nuances on the edge but is otherwise still intact. The bouquet is initially not that clean with notes of rhubarb and husk and while is improves with breathing it never becomes explosive. The mouthfeel, on the other hand, is greatly satisfying with its velvety and soft characteristics that make it very rewarding."

yr. 1967 Doctorwine:

88 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy" from the vintage 1967 on 25.06.2012 with 88 of 100 points.

"A clear garnet color. The bouquet is slightly fleeting but after 45 years tit was to be expected. Stylistically, this is a far cry from Angelo Gaja's wines today. In other words, it reflects a much older wine-making style. The taste is decidedly good, an excellent grit, nice acidity, a subtle and elegant body, Veronelli would have said a ''solid backbone'', and a savory and pleasing finish."

yr. 2017 Falstaff:

95 of 100 Points.

"Falstaff" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG" from the vintage 2017 on 01.10.2020 with 95 of 100 points.

"Leuchtendes, aufhellendes Rubingranat. Eröffnet mit betont würzigen Noten nach Gewürznelken, etwas Rosen und viel saftiger Kirsche. Rund und geschmeidig im Ansatz, öffnet sich dann mit präsentem, knackigem Tannin, ist sehr gut eingebunden, im Finale fester Druck und herzhaft."

yr. 2016 Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com:

97 of 100 Points.

"Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG" from the vintage 2016 on 01.01.2020 with 97 of 100 points.

"Eleganza pura nel calice grazie all'enorme bouquet floreale di petali di rosa, succo di pompelmo, buccia di mandarino, succo di limone e fiori bianchi, questo giovane Barbaresco stupisce a primo impatto. Intrigante e profondo rivela dolcemente la sua essenza con sopraffina armonia. Corpo pieno, tannini setosi di encomiabile fattura ed un finale solido e compatto che dona garanzie e certezza sulla sua vita futura. Meglio dal 2022."

96 of 100 Points.

"Falstaff" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG" from the vintage 2016 on 01.11.2019 with 96 of 100 points.

Loaded with finesse and tension, the elegant, structured palate delivers crushed raspberry, white pepper and star anise set against fresh acidity and taut, lithe tannins. Structured and extremely elegant, the focused, impeccable palate doles out juicy red cherry, strawberry, baking spice and star anise set against taut polished tannins that provide seamless support. It's well balanced, with fresh acidity. It's already tempting but hold for even more complexity. Drink 2022?2032. Kerin O?Keefe"

"This isn't just a great wine for what was a notoriously cool, wet vintage, it's quite simply a magnificent wine. Perfumed and loaded with finesse, it opens with scents of woodland berry, iris and baking spice while the vibrant, balanced palate doles out Marasca cherry, dark culinary spice, crushed herb and menthol. Refined tannins and fresh acidity provide the taut framework while a licorice note wraps around the finish. Gorgeous. Drink 2022?2034."

The polished, structured palate is loaded with finesse, delivering a wonderful depth of flavors including raspberry, dark cherry, licorice, mint and white pepper. Vibrant acidity and firm, refined tannins provide impeccable balance. It's still young and will develop even more complexity over the next 10?15 years. Drink 2020?2035."

"Gajas Selektion seiner besten Barbaresco-Rebberge: Mit der Belüftung Bouquet nach Waldbeeren, Gewürzen und Kräutern; gefällt mit seiner Finesse und Eleganz, die Tannine geschliffen und perfekt eingebunden. Charaktervoller, klar gearbeiteter Tropfen, der noch reifen kann."

94 of 100 Points.

"Wine Enthusiast" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG" from the vintage 2011 on 01.07.2016 with 94 of 100 points.

"Smooth and elegant, this opens with a lovely fragrance of violet, rose, lush dark fruit and a whiff of cake spices. The juicy palate doles out ripe black cherry, licorice and mocha alongside silky tannins. It's surprisingly fresh and precise for what was a hot and precocious vintage."

yr. 2012 Wine Enthusiast:

94 of 100 Points.

"Wine Enthusiast" has rated the wine "Gaja Barbaresco DOCG" from the vintage 2012 on 01.01.2015 with 94 of 100 points.

"In 2012, Gaja didn't bottle his single-vineyard crus because they didn't reach his high quality standards, and many of the grapes from these celebrated vineyards finished in this elegant, firmly structured wine. It opens with enticing aromas of perfumed berry, pressed violet and sweet baking spice. On the palate, a backbone of tightly woven but refined tannins support black cherry, raspberry, white pepper, anise and tobacco. It's rather austere and still in its infancy so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2018?2032."
