"VINUM 11/1993 - Noch als Barolo kam der Sperss in den 80er Jahren auf den Markt, erst in den 90er Jahren entschloss sich Angelo Gaja, ihn wie seine anderen Lagenweine zu einem Langhe Nebbiolo zu deklassieren. Als Einzellage stand der Sperss aber immer etwas im Schatten seiner Brüder, vor allem des Sorì San Lorenzo, dem bekanntesten Cru von Gaja. In manchen Jahrgängen, so eben 1989, zeigt der reinsortige Nebbiolo allerdings seine wahre und bis heute unterschätzte Grösse ? und das bis heute: Brillantes Rubin; in der Nase nach mehrstündiger Belüftung ein Potpourri an Aromen, die von Himbeere, Veilchen und reifer Pflaume über exotische Gewürze bis hin zu Schokoladenoten reichen; der Ansatz komplex, voll, mit viel Charakter und doch auch Finesse, die Säure in perfekter Balance mit dem exzellenten Tannin.
