"This syrah comes from the terraces of the Huasco River, at the beginning of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest in the world, but also very close to the influence of the sea, just 15 kilometers away. Ventisquero has two vineyards there, one planted right next to the river and the other, on the third terrace, on white soils rich in salts. Water is scarce and comes in the form of "camanchacas," the damp Pacific breezes that bathe the area. Aged half in foudres and half in concrete eggs, this is an almost furious expression of the variety--the red and black fruits, the spices, the herbs, the meaty notes that appear like a waterfall on the palate, the fruity aromas flooding the nose. And those firm tannins like concrete pillars supporting an enormous building. A syrah that's not syrah, one that goes far beyond variety to enter the territory of a unique place in South America. Desert and sea and camanchacas, drops of salty water delivered by the Pacific every morning that allow life to grow."

This syrah has radiantly fresh and vibrant red fruit and has zero residual sugar. There's no sweetness here, just red fruit in a state of acidity and delicious, invigorating freshness. A completely different terroir (a vineyard beside the sea in the world's most arid desert) shows us an unusual face of syrah that's quite different from anything produced further south."

"In 2007, Ventisquiero planted vines in the Atacama Region's Huasco zone in the far north of Chile. It's an extreme zone with saline and chalky soils along the Huasco River, 14 kilometers from the sea. This wine comes from a selection of two vineyards there. It's crushed by foot and then aged for 20 months with all its lees, without racking. The result is a wine with intense red fruit aromas that's deep and long, yet so easy to drink, so smooth it makes you want to uncork the next bottle soon. The acidity does the bulk of the work here. A wine that's pushing the borders of Chile's wine country into the driest desert in the world."
